Business Etiquette for Gift Giving: Dos and Don’ts

By Jamie Pritscher · Jan 02, 2026

Business Etiquette for Gift Giving: 10 Dos and Don'ts

Gift giving in today’s business world goes beyond a simple gesture. It reflects your company’s values, awareness, and professionalism. From hybrid workplaces to a stronger emphasis on inclusivity and giving back, here are the updated dos and don’ts.

UNDERSTANDING PREFERENCES

DO take the time to understand interests, preferences, and lifestyle when appropriate. A thoughtful, well-aligned gift shows attention to detail and genuine appreciation.
If personal preferences are unclear, choose gifts that give back, such as those supporting food banks or community initiatives.

DON’T make the gift feel like a branded promotion. Avoid overly personal items such as jewelry, fragrance, or anything that could be interpreted as intimate.
If your company values social impact, choose gifts that reflect that purpose rather than self-promotion.

PRIORITIZE INCLUSIVITY & CULTURAL AWARENESS

DO be mindful of diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and traditions. Neutral, inclusive gifts are always a safe and thoughtful choice.

DON’T assume shared holidays, traditions, or humor. Avoid religious-specific items unless you are certain they are appropriate. Stay away from anything that could be controversial, political, or culturally insensitive.

TIMING MATTERS

DO give with intention. Key moments include holidays, milestones, promotions, project completions, and expressions of gratitude. Timely gifts reinforce sincerity.

DON’T send gifts as an afterthought. Delayed or poorly timed gifting can feel transactional rather than meaningful.

SET A CLEAR BUDGET & FOLLOW COMPLIANCE

DO establish a budget upfront that aligns with company guidelines and client expectations. Be aware of corporate policies, vendor restrictions, and potential tax implications.

DON’T exceed acceptable limits. Overly expensive gifts can create discomfort or raise compliance concerns, especially in regulated industries.

CONSIDER DIETARY & LIFESTYLE NEEDS

DO choose options that are flexible or inclusive when possible. Gifts with a variety of choices or clearly labeled ingredients help ensure everyone can enjoy them.

DON’T assume preferences. Not everyone drinks alcohol or consumes certain foods due to health, religious, or personal reasons.

THINK ABOUT DELIVERY (ESPECIALLY FOR HYBRID TEAMS)

DO account for where your recipient works. Direct shipping, clean packaging, and easy delivery experiences are essential.

DON’T create extra work for the recipient. Avoid gifts that require complicated pickup, refrigeration coordination, or in-office assumptions.

PACKAGING & PRESENTATION MATTER

DO invest in clean, professional, and well-branded (but not overly promotional) packaging. The presentation is part of the experience.

DON’T overlook the details. Poor packaging can diminish even the most thoughtful gift.

ADD MEANING WITH A PERSONAL NOTE

DO include a thoughtful, personalized message. A short, sincere note elevates the gift and reinforces the relationship.

DON’T send a gift without context. A missing or generic message can make the gesture feel impersonal.

RESPECT PRIVACY & PROFESSIONAL BOUNDARIES

DO consider how and when the gift is given. Some recipients prefer private acknowledgment rather than public attention.

DON’T put recipients in uncomfortable situations, especially in group settings or across hierarchical relationships.

ALIGN WITH PURPOSE & IMPACT

DO choose gifts that reflect your company’s values. Gifts that give back are increasingly meaningful and align with modern expectations.

DON’T overlook the opportunity to make a positive impact. Thoughtful gifting can support causes and strengthen your brand at the same time.

FINAL THOUGHT

Business gifting is about more than the item itself. It is about intention, inclusivity, and impact. When done thoughtfully, it strengthens relationships, reflects your brand values, and leaves a lasting impression.
